Qualcomm unveiled its flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chips on Tuesday at the Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii.
Both new processors are built on a 2-nanometer process node for faster processing and significantly improved power efficiency across devices. Qualcomm said the chips outperform last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with gains across computing, graphics and artificial intelligence.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 delivers 13 percent faster CPU performance, 44 percent faster GPU performance and 35 percent faster NPU performance than last year's chip.
Both chips share 37 percent improved CPU power efficiency and 40 percent improved GPU power efficiency over the previous generation. The redesigned Oryon CPU tops out at 5 gigahertz, which Qualcomm says is the first mobile processor to reach that speed.
Qualcomm Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets Chris Patrick said the two-platform lineup gives manufacturers greater choice while expanding access to its latest AI capabilities.
A central focus of both chips is on-device agentic artificial intelligence, which Qualcomm describes as faster, more personal and adaptive. The company said these assistants can understand context and carry out actions on a user's behalf rather than awaiting individual prompts.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said at the summit that the world is at the beginning of the agentic age, which Snapdragon is built to power today.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can run more than 30 billion models on the device itself, according to Qualcomm. Its new Sensing Hub uses dual micro neural processing units that can support models with up to 200 million parameters.
Qualcomm said its updated Personal Scribe, a feature on the new chips, can learn from messages, emails and conversations to build a private knowledge graph for users.
The Extreme chip carries an expanded Hexagon neural processing unit with 16 megabytes of FlexCache shared memory, which is 50 percent larger than the previous version's.
For cameras, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 supports 8K video recording at 60 frames per second and 4K at 240 frames per second for slow motion.
Qualcomm said both chips enable intelligent stabilization and an image signaling processor tightly coupled to the neural unit, letting AI work on images during capture instead of after.
Qualcomm is introducing an AI-rendering technology called Adreno Neural Fusion that is supported across major game engines including Unreal and Unity. Qualcomm manager of product marketing Matthew Grossman said it delivers upscaled images with rock-solid frame rates at lower power consumption.
The Extreme chip also packs AI-dedicated Adreno matrix cores and 18 megabytes of high-performance memory for better visuals and longer play. Qualcomm SVP and general manager of handsets Chris Patrick said Adreno Neural Fusion is proprietary technology tightly integrating graphics and AI.
At the summit, Xiaomi and Motorola both debuted new flagship phones powered by the chips, and Motorola's Signature 27 is expected to launch later this year.
