Discord Begins Global Age Verification Rollout

Discord, the community messaging platform, will start rolling out age verification and global age group sorting for all of its users beginning Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Discord Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy announced the global rollout in a blog post on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The company said more than ninety percent of Discord users will not need to verify their age or submit identity documents.

The rollout follows Discord's February delay of age verification plans after users raised privacy concerns about biometric scans and identification checks. A third-party vendor working with Discord was breached last year, potentially exposing data from seventy thousand users, including identification photos.

Chief Technology Officer Vishnevskiy wrote that age assurance draws strong opinions, especially when it involves sharing biometric information or identification. He noted age assurance laws are expanding, including launches in Brazil and Texas, prompting Discord to adopt its own privacy-preserving approach.

Discord said more than ninety percent of its users will not have to verify their age or submit identity documents under the company's new global age assurance system.

How Discord Estimates Age Groups

Discord will estimate whether an account belongs to an adult aged eighteen or older or a teen aged thirteen to seventeen. The company said it uses signals such as account tenure, device data, activity patterns, and server memberships rather than message content.

Discord stated that it does not estimate users' ages based on message content, profile data, calls, or other demographic attributes. Its machine learning model has learned patterns showing that typical fifteen-year-old use looks different in aggregate from typical thirty-year-old use.

For confirmed adults, nothing about the platform will change, but teen accounts will face several new automatic restrictions on Discord. Teen accounts will be blocked from age-restricted servers or channels, and message requests from non-friends will go to a separate inbox.

Teens will also receive alerts on the platform when accepting friend requests from people with whom they share no mutual friends. Discord claimed its model is as accurate as biometric methods, though some accounts may end up in the wrong age group.

Alternatives, Vendors, and Privacy Concerns

If Discord cannot confirm a user is an adult, that user can still prove age without a biometric scan or identification. Users may instead share a credit card or age group data from their Apple App Store or Google Play Store account.

Discord has also added options including Google Wallet and AgeKey, a reusable age credential for users who prefer not to submit selfies or personal identification cards.

Discord retired the manual review process linked to its September 2025 data breach, with reviews now handled by provider k-ID. The company said it will only receive a user's age group, while vendors must delete submitted data immediately after each check.

Vishnevskiy acknowledged that any form of age assurance, and the possibility of sharing biometric data or identification, is a controversial topic. He admitted accounts may end up in the wrong age group, though users can check or correct their status in settings.

Discord said the estimation model is not currently available in the United Kingdom or Australia, where the company has already launched separate age checks under local regulations.
