Apple Smart Display May Launch In October

Apple could unveil its long-rumored smart home display as soon as October, according to the Bloomberg technology analyst Mark Gurman. In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman narrowed the launch window after earlier saying the device remained on track for 2026.

Apple is reportedly testing the product extensively in the homes of its employees ahead of its upcoming expected official public launch. References reportedly discovered within Apple's software code link the tabletop model to the internal designation J490 for the home device.

The two versions will reportedly share a compact, square display, with one including a base for a desk or counter. The other can be fixed to a wall, and its screen is expected to be smaller than many Echo Show models.

Apple has reportedly developed a dedicated operating system built around Siri AI, with visual elements drawn from iOS, tvOS, and watchOS for the new home hub device.

Siri AI Features And Personalization Drive New Device

The device's interface will reportedly offer a Home Screen, widgets, and selectable clock designs, allowing various useful information to remain visible when the device is idle.

Users will reportedly be able to search information held across their Apple devices and accounts using Siri AI, according to reports. They can also retrieve previously shared songs or podcasts, locate photos, and request specific actions within supported native Apple apps.

The display's camera will purportedly support video calls and recognize individual household members to personalize on-screen information automatically without the depth-sensing Face ID hardware typically required.

Once it identifies the person in front of it, the software will present that user's appointments, notes, preferred media, and news. Apple reportedly postponed the home hub several times because these Siri features were not fully ready before the iOS 27 release.

That obstacle has now largely been removed following the release of iOS 27 with Siri AI earlier this month, according to the latest Gurman newsletter report.

Home Hub Strategy And Market Context

Other expected functions include smart home controls, intercom communication, music and video playback, plus access to Calendar, Notes, and Reminders. An iPhone will be required during initial setup and for certain connected features, according to the multiple recent tech reports.

The home display would be among the first major new products introduced under Apple CEO John Ternus, who recently took over the company's top leadership role.

Gurman says Apple intends the iPhone to stay the center of mobile lives, while display and HomePod create a home hub. Ternus described an ideal AI device combining constant internet connectivity, a useful display, quality cameras and microphones, and strong battery life.

Apple has not updated its HomePod speaker line since 2023, and rumors of a home hub have stretched as far back as 2024, according to industry reports.

The last HomePod speaker saw a $50 price increase from $299 to $349 earlier this year due to the ongoing widespread RAM memory shortage affecting electronics.
