Scottsdale, Arizona-based HomeSmart announced on Tuesday a strategic merger with NorthGroup Real Estate that will add nearly 2,000 agents to its nationwide real estate brokerage network.
The transaction significantly expands HomeSmart's existing presence across the key Southeast markets of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It also grows the combined company to more than 27,000 agents nationwide operating in over 250 offices across 48 states.
The specific financial terms of the strategic merger were not disclosed in the public announcement or in related statements by either company or its senior executives.
The announcement said NorthGroup's nearly 2,000 agents will gain access to HomeSmart's expanded national scale, its proprietary end-to-end technology platform, and the broad national referral network.
Both real estate brokerages use a 100% commission model that replaces traditional split-based compensation with flat fees and technology support. HomeSmart Founder and CEO Matt Widdows said that shared model alignment was a key factor behind the strategic merger agreement.
The merger underscores continued consolidation among large, low-cost, high-volume real estate brokerages relying on national technology platforms and referral networks. Industry commission pressure and margin compression continue pushing scale-focused brokerage models to seek growth through acquisitions in high-growth Southeast regions.
HomeSmart said the NorthGroup merger advances its broader national growth strategy by significantly deepening its presence in several key Southeast real estate markets across four states.
HomeSmart Founder and CEO Matt Widdows said NorthGroup has built an impressive business with a strong culture, talented agents, and a model that aligns closely with HomeSmart.
Widdows said the merger is an important part of HomeSmart's continued future brokerage growth and prioritizes strong ongoing agent support. He added that expanded tools, services, and additional benefits from HomeSmart's national referral network will soon follow for all NorthGroup agents.
HomeSmart, founded in 2000, operates a proprietary end-to-end technology platform that provides integrated tools and services to its real estate agents and its national franchise partners.
NorthGroup will continue operating as it does today under its existing brand, allowing its real estate agents to maintain their current business practices and client relationships.
NorthGroup Real Estate Founder, President and CEO Scott Wilkinson emphasized continuity for agents while positioning the merger as a scale play. He said it is an exciting milestone and an opportunity to build on everything the company has already created together.
For NorthGroup agents, Wilkinson said it remains business as usual as they continue focusing on clients and growing their businesses now with added HomeSmart scale and support.
He added that NorthGroup agents can now access the added national strength and the broad resources of HomeSmart behind them. Wilkinson said the companies are excited about what this creates for NorthGroup and all its many agents across the Southeast.
HomeSmart and NorthGroup said they share an agent-first philosophy and a 100% commission business model that created a strong foundation for the strategic real estate merger.
