Justine Musk Recalls Marriage In New Documentary

Canadian author Justine Musk has publicly described her marriage to Elon Musk in a new documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. The nearly four-hour film, titled Musk, premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 and drew wide attention.

Justine Musk and Elon Musk married in 2000 and divorced in 2008 after having six children together during their eight-year union. She says that the marriage left her feeling diminished, alleging that Elon Musk regularly belittled her and dismissed her feelings.

In the documentary, Justine Musk says that she first learned the term gaslighting through her own relationship with Elon Musk. She also recalls feeling that Elon Musk was constantly remarking on the many ways in which he found her lacking.

Justine Musk recalls that during their first wedding dance, Elon Musk told her, "I am the alpha in this relationship," a remark she cites as defining their dynamic.

Justine Musk and Elon Musk's first child, Nevada Alexander Musk, died from sudden infant death syndrome in 2002 when he was just ten weeks old, she says.

Justine Musk disputes Elon Musk's 2022 account in which he wrote that he held the dying baby in his arms. She says instead that she was holding their son, Nevada, at the moment he died, contradicting his own published recollection.

Justine Musk further alleges that Elon Musk stopped providing their daughter Vivian with health insurance after she came out as transgender, she claims in the film.

The documentary also examines Elon Musk's strained relationship with his transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, who is now an adult. Justine Musk says that Elon Musk asked her to tell Vivian that he would always love her, according to the film.

Among the other contributors appearing on camera are Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard, journalist Zoe Schiffer, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton and Elon Musk's own father, Errol Musk.

Elon Musk Dismisses Documentary As Hit Piece

Elon Musk declined to take part in the documentary and has publicly dismissed the project as a hit piece against him. He has also criticised the filmmaker directly, while Alex Gibney has defended both his reporting methods and the finished documentary.

The full film runs approximately 225 minutes, or nearly four hours, excluding its intermission and is scheduled for a broader theatrical release on 16 October 2026 worldwide.

Director Alex Gibney constructed the documentary through years of extensive interviews and research into Elon Musk's personal, business and political life. The film also explores Elon Musk's public controversies, including his growing role in politics, technology, social media and global business.

This marks the first time Justine Musk has spoken publicly and at length about the eight-year marriage and its aftermath. Her account adds a personal dimension to a film focused largely on Elon Musk's business empire and his current political activity.
